Biography

An undergraduate of Oberlin College, Dr. Butler received his doctorate from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio. He completed an internship at Rhode Island Hospital and was a Research Associate at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland. His residency and medical oncology fellowship were completed at Georgetown University Hospital and the Vincent Lombardi Cancer Institute in Washington, DC. Dr. Butler is board certified in Medical Oncology and Internal Medicine.

Strongly interested in educating others, Dr. Butler has held various academic affiliations throughout his career. As Clinical Professor of Medicine at Georgetown University, Dr. Butler teaches hematology and oncology to medical students and residents. He has been awarded the Georgetown University Medical School Golden Apple Award for Teaching as well as both the 20 Year Teaching Award and 30 Year Teaching Award at Georgetown University.

Dr. Butler remains highly active in both the local community and national organizations. His local appointments include Chairman of the Cancer Committee and Chief, Section of Oncology, for the Virginia Hospital Center. Dr. Butler also serves on the Arlington Medical Society and the Virginia Hospital Center Tumor Board, and he speaks regularly within the community on behalf of the American Cancer Society and Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Dr. Butler has held memberships in national organizations such as the American Cancer Society, the American Society of Hematology, the American Association for Cancer Research, and the American Medical Association. He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians.

Dr. Butler regularly fundraises for hospice and the Arlington Free Clinics. He enjoys spending time with family, traveling, photography, and fitness.
