Local Oncologist Neelima Denduluri, MD, FASCO of Virginia Cancer Specialists

Named Advocacy Champion by the Association for Clinical Oncology

Dr. Denduluri is a medical oncologist who specializes in breast cancer and is a well-respected patient advocate within the community.

Arlington, VA September 30, 2020 — Virginia Cancer Specialists, a leading provider of comprehensive cancer care and a member of The US Oncology Network, is proud to announce that medical oncologist Neelima Denduluri, MD, FASCO was named an Advocacy Champion by the Association for Clinical Oncology (ASCO) during the association’s 2020 Advocacy Summit in September.

Advocacy Champions are ASCO volunteers who have made meaningful contributions to ASCO’s advocacy activities throughout the year to ensure that every patient with cancer has access to high-quality, high-value cancer care, no matter who they are or where they live. Advocates speak with federal lawmakers and agencies, send personalized letters to members of Congress through ASCO’s ACT Network, engage with state lawmakers on policy priorities at the state-level, and host site visits for lawmakers in their home states and districts.

“Congratulations to this year’s Advocacy Champions,” said Carolyn Hendricks, MD, FASCO, ASCO Government Relations Committee Chair. “Their continued efforts to educate Congress on the promise and challenges of providing high-quality cancer care are important during the best of times, and they become absolutely critical during a global pandemic. Through the unwavering commitment of these dedicated advocates, we can continue our work to advance policies that will improve access to high-quality, equitable care for people with cancer.”

Throughout the past year, Dr. Denduluri’s advocacy efforts include meeting with legislators, collaborating with patient advocates, and mobilizing her colleagues to participate through the ACT Network – an online ASCO advocacy hub that allows advocates to quickly and easily engage their lawmakers on key policy issues related to cancer research and the delivery of high-quality cancer care.

“I am dedicated to providing patients with compassionate, leading-edge treatments that meet their individual needs and concerns,” said Dr. Denduluri. “We must continue to advocate and reach out to colleagues and legislators for equitable cancer care, including access to clinical trials, as well as mitigating financial toxicity. I am humbled to receive the ASCO honor of Advocacy Champion along with my colleagues.”

Neelima Denduluri, MD, FASCO, is board certified in medical oncology and internal medicine. She serves as the Co-Director of the Virginia Cancer Specialists Research Program, is the Associate Chair of Breast Cancer Research for US Oncology, and is on the ASCO PAC Advisory Council.
