Surgeons play a critical role in the treatment of breast cancer and complex breast diseases.
That’s why it is extremely important to choose a highly qualified and experienced surgeon who specializes in breast surgery. While many general surgeons occasionally operate on breast cancer, research shows patients have a better prognosis if their surgeries are done by breast surgeons who perform a high volume of breast-specific procedures¹.

“From benign breast problems to breast cancer it’s my passion to keep informed of the latest treatments and technologies that benefit my patients. I love working with an experienced and dedicated team of physicians who work to personalize and tailor each treatment plan to best meet the needs of the patient as an individual – and the family as a whole.“
Stephanie Akbari, MD, FACS
“As a surgeon, while precision and technical expertise are paramount, compassion, honesty, and trust are equally important. I strive to treat every patient with equity and like family, taking the time to listen, understand, and guide them through every decision. By combining the latest advances in breast cancer care with a deeply personal approach, my goal is to help patients feel informed, supported, and confident every step of the way.” Elizabeth Feldman, MD, FACS
“As a breast surgeon, I guide patients through the emotional tidal wave of a cancer diagnosis, offering clarity and support in navigating treatment decisions. In our close-knit team, we are committed to delivering compassionate and empathetic care, providing comprehensive support beyond treatment and with a caring touch.” Matthew T. Hueman, MD, FACS, FSSO
“As a breast surgeon, I have the privilege of helping my patients find the answers they are seeking; empowering them to make informed decisions. My passion is to provide excellent personalized care to every patient and to treat each one with compassion and understanding.” Lindy Rosal, MD, FACS
“I believe in a covenant relationship with each patient and family. This is my calling, not just my job. We encounter the person with breast cancer at a most vulnerable time. Our goal is to truly care for them and guide them through the development of a personalized treatment plan that addresses all of the patient’s concerns and helps them move forward.” Hernan Vargas, MD, FACS
“The best outcomes involve addressing all three phases of care – before a diagnosis with personalized risk assessment and screening, during a diagnosis with a blend of cutting edge technology and surgical skill, and after a diagnosis with a focus on survivorship and wellness. Two goals when it comes to treating breast cancer: First identify and provide every proven method of treatment available worldwide and second make it personal! Second, one patient at a time – all breast cancers are NOT the same and every patient’s plan should be catered to their needs.” David Weintritt, MD, FACS
Virginia Cancer Specialists’ breast surgeons perform a full range of procedures, including:
Removes the tumor and a margin of surrounding tissue while preserving as much of the breast as possible.
Removes all breast tissue; today’s techniques include skin- and nipple-sparing approaches when appropriate.
Rebuilds breast shape using implants, often coordinated with your surgery for a single combined recovery.
Uses your own tissue to rebuild the breast, an option our surgeons will discuss based on your anatomy and goals.
Surgery on the lymph nodes under the arm (the axilla) using approaches that remove only the nodes needed for accurate staging, helping lower the risk of arm swelling and other side effects.
Lumpectomy guided by ultrasound in the operating room, helping your surgeon pinpoint the tumor and preserve as much healthy breast tissue as possible.
Surgical removal of an area of concern so it can be examined. When the area cannot be felt, it is first marked using imaging (localization) so it can be found precisely during surgery.
Removal of tumors involving the chest wall, coordinated with your broader care team when additional treatment or reconstruction is needed.
Options for patients who prefer not to have implant or tissue reconstruction. A Goldilocks mastectomy uses your remaining skin and tissue to shape a small breast mound; aesthetic flat closure creates a smooth, flat chest contour.
Incisions placed in less visible locations, such as along the edge of the areola or in the fold beneath the breast, so scars are less noticeable after healing.
A minimally invasive biopsy performed in the office to collect a tissue sample for diagnosis, often providing answers sooner and without a trip to the operating room.
A microsurgical technique that connects lymphatic vessels to nearby veins during lymph node surgery, helping lymph fluid drain and lowering the risk of lymphedema (arm swelling).
Follow-up procedures that improve the comfort or appearance of a previous mastectomy site, and specialized techniques for closing wounds that are difficult to heal.
Techniques that preserve or reconnect nerves during mastectomy and reconstruction, with the goal of restoring some feeling to the chest.
Removal of one or more milk ducts behind the nipple, most often to diagnose or treat nipple discharge.
Combines cancer removal with plastic surgery techniques in the same operation, reshaping the breast to help maintain a natural appearance after lumpectomy.
Identifies and protects the lymph nodes that drain the arm during underarm surgery, helping reduce the risk of lymphedema.
Uses one or two tracers to find the first lymph nodes cancer would most likely reach, so only those few nodes are removed and checked rather than a larger group.
