Dr. Sandeep Khandhar is board certified in cardiothoracic and general surgery. In 2019, he joined Virginia Cancer Specialists having over 20 years of clinical experience. He has a special interest in the management of Lung Cancer and employing minimally invasive surgical techniques.

Dr. Khandhar earned a degree from Northwestern University in Biomedical Engineering followed by his medical degree. He then went on to complete his internship and residency in General Surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, where he also served as the administrative chief resident. There he completed a fellowship in Cardiothoracic Surgery and then further specialized in Thoracic Surgery and Thoracic Oncology at Duke University. He has been practicing cardiothoracic surgery in Northern Virginia for over a decade and has been granted many awards and honors. Among these honors were Northern Virginia Magazine Top Doctors and Washingtonian Top Doctors.

He has served and continues to serve in many hospital leadership roles. In an effort to steer the direction of growth and development in surgical lung cancer treatment, he sits on the advisory boards of leading medical device companies globally, staying abreast of cutting-edge technological innovations in the thoracic field. Dr. Khandhar is passionate about collaboration and believes that the best possible outcomes occur when the entire thoracic oncology team – medical oncology, radiation oncology and thoracic surgery work together to care for the patient.

Dr. Khandhar currently resides in Falls Church, Virginia with his wife and two daughters. In his spare time he likes to travel.
