July marks Sarcoma Awareness Month, a time to spotlight this rare group of cancers and the ongoing efforts to improve the lives of those affected. As a musculoskeletal tumor surgeon, I see firsthand how surgical innovation continues to shape the future of sarcoma care. These advances are improving outcomes, preserving function, and offering patients more choices than ever before.
One of the most exciting developments is the increasing use of minimally invasive techniques in select cases. These technologies allow us to operate with greater precision, especially in anatomically complex areas like the pelvis. By reducing blood loss and surgical trauma, these approaches help patients recover more quickly without compromising the goal of complete tumor removal.

Speaking of limb preservation, the field of reconstructive surgery has evolved tremendously. I now routinely collaborate with specialists to use 3D-printed bone cutting guides and implants to restore function after tumor removal. These techniques have significantly improved our ability to reconstruct complex bone anatomy, in ways that would have been difficult just a decade ago.
In the future, advanced imaging tools, such as intraoperative fluorescence may revolutionize how we visualize tumors during surgery and allow us to more confidently preserve vital structures while still achieving clear margins, a balance that is critical in limb-sparing procedures.
Lastly, I’ve seen the benefits of enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols firsthand. These standardized, multidisciplinary care plans help our patients bounce back faster, with fewer complications and shorter hospital stays.
It is an exciting and hopeful time in sarcoma surgery. This Sarcoma Awareness Month, I’m proud to share how far we’ve come, and how much more we can do to serve our patients.
