About Casey Nelson
Casey Nelson is a dedicated Oncology and Palliative Care Social Worker at Virginia Cancer Specialists, where she provides short-term counseling, emotional support, crisis intervention, and resource navigation for patients and caregivers. She utilizes evidence-based practice models in her approach to counseling that consist of solution-focused therapy, mindfulness-based stress reduction, and acceptance and commitment therapy. She collaborates closely with the multidisciplinary team to ensure holistic, patient-centered care and has facilitated wellness workshops such as Mindfulness Mondays and previously led the first in-person support group at the practice, Building Connections Breast Cancer Support Group.
Casey earned both her Bachelor and Master of Social Work degrees from George Mason University, where she was recognized for academic excellence and leadership. Her clinical training includes internships in oncology, nursing and rehabilitation, and school-based settings, where she supported individuals across the lifespan with a focus on emotional well-being and care coordination.
In addition to her clinical work, Casey has experience in university education, program coordination, and community engagement. She is passionate about improving quality of life for patients facing serious illnesses and is committed to compassionate, evidence-based practice.
Casey is currently a supervisee in social work, pursuing clinical hours to obtain her LCSW under the supervision of Tracy Tierney, LCSW.
