Dr. Khandhar brings expertise in the latest advances in minimally invasive thoracic surgery to Virginia Cancer Specialists and The US Oncology Network

Fairfax, Va. (March 6, 2019) — Virginia Cancer Specialists (VCS) is pleased to announce that Sandeep J. Khandhar, MD, FACS, a thoracic surgeon, has joined the practice. Dr. Khandhar has extensive experience in minimally invasive procedures, bringing new surgical expertise to VCS and enhancing the practice’s multidisciplinary lung cancer team. VCS, a practice in The US Oncology Network, is a premier cancer care and research center in Northern Virginia with more than 40 years of service to patients.

“The complexity of lung diseases requires a multidisciplinary team approach to better manage the comprehensive care required to drive optimal outcomes,” said Alex Spira, MD, PhD, FACP, medical oncologist and lung cancer specialist at VCS and co-chair of The US Oncology Network Thoracic Oncology Committee. “Dr. Khandhar is highly skilled in the very latest minimally invasive surgical techniques that provide a better postoperative experience for patients. His surgical expertise is a great addition to our lung cancer team, and we look forward to seeing many contributions from him that will enhance patient care.”

Board certified in cardiothoracic surgery and general surgery, Dr. Khandhar has more than 20 years of clinical experience. He earned a degree from Northwestern University in Biomedical Engineering followed by his medical degree. He then went on to complete his internship and residency in General Surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, where he also served as the administrative chief resident. There he completed a fellowship in Cardiothoracic Surgery and further specialized in Thoracic Surgery and Thoracic Oncology at Duke University. He has been practicing cardiothoracic surgery in Northern Virginia for over a decade. During that time, he has received many awards and honors, including being named to Northern Virginia Magazine’s Top Doctors and Washingtonian’s Top Doctors.

Dr. Khandhar has served in many hospital leadership roles, and he continues in this capacity.
