Patient Stories

At Virginia Cancer Specialists, we are honored to share the stories of the patients who inspire us every day. Our Patient Stories page features real-life experiences of those who have faced cancer with strength, resilience, and hope. These stories highlight the challenges, triumphs, and journeys of individuals who have walked through our doors, each one unique yet united by the spirit of perseverance. We invite you to read their stories and gain insight into their experiences, as well as the support they received from our dedicated care team. We hope that through these personal narratives, you find inspiration and encouragement, knowing that no matter where you are in your journey, you are not alone.

These patient stories are based on the individual patient’s unique experiences
and do not represent all patient outcomes.

Back to the Stage Before cancer entered my life, I was always moving. I’m a wife, mother of five, grandmother to an amazing grandson who calls me Gam Gam, and someone who has never been very good at sitting still. After spending years in education as a SOL Remedial Specialist…

I had childhood cancer, and now I’m a pitcher on my high school’s varsity baseball team.
This is my journey, on my terms, and I embrace it.
I have cancer, but I will get through this. I will go through with the recommended procedures. I will trust in the doctor’s skill to remove this cancer from my body so I can get back on the track of being who I am. And so… that’s exactly what I did.
Get educated. Ask questions and be a part of your care.
I didn’t want to know the long term, I wanted to focus on what was happening right in the moment.
Decide to have an impact. Doing something for someone else can help the healing process. You can still maximize your potential despite the cancer diagnosis.
“I’ve been candid with people about my cancer experience. I’m glad to be able to offer support and advice.”
“Modern medicine, a competent medical staff, my positive attitude, and my faith are the reasons I’m alive.”
Getting through law school is hard enough. Now do it with cancer.
There is nothing but hope going forward.
When I completed my last cancer treatment, I understood the significant life change I had undergone. But in that moment, I also realized that cancer had helped me find the power of my voice. Reginé Bumper, patient - Virginia Cancer Specialists
Imagine that feeling of control, creativity, and joy. Cancer doesn’t take that moment away. Cancer takes a backseat while I’m holding the brush.
